“I really don’t like that guy.”
Exiting his hotel, Andrew is greeted by the police officer that has been dispatched to be his partner for the length of his stay. Offering a hand shake, “Mr. Irons, Iago Gouveia, I’ll be your partner for the duration of this, investigation, if that’s even the right word.” Iago stands at a solid six foot, and is built for the job of police work. His black hair is buzz cut, but has been neglected long enough so that it falls about his head. Brown eyes greet with kind toughness from his worn face from early morning and long nights on the force.
Returning the hand shake, “Call me Andrew, and please tell me we’ll be out on the town tonight, I’ve had my face in paperwork all damn day I need some fun.”
“That’s the plan. We actually received a lead on one of the suspects downtown near the bars.”
“Then what are we waiting for, let’s go get trucked up!”
Watching the streets, Andrew fishes for info on who he’s watching out for, “Any idea who we’re after?”
“No. Caller said she saw one of the men on the poster, but wasn’t really sure as to which one in the lineup it was. My only suggestion is to park at the end of the street and watch who comes and goes.”
“Yea I guess that’s our best bet.” As they pass the second bar, Andrew’s senses spike, “Stop the car!”
Iago pulls over to the curb as quick as he can, “What’s wrong man?”
Sitting still, Andrew tries to meditate on what he felt, “I had a…felling I guess. It’s hard to explain, but my family has some sort of connection to the spiritual world. Vampires are apparently part of that world, so I can sense when one’s close, but I still have trouble pinpointing exactly where they are.” Andrew meditates for a few more minutes. “There,” pointing to the bar directly behind them, “he’s in there.”
“Ok. So what’s the plan?”
“I’ll head to the back, I saw a patio, and you head in the front door that should push him right to me.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Iago and Andrew exit the cruiser and make for their places. Iago, hands Andrew a walkie-talkie. Andrew jumps the fence of the bar patio, and orders the people that are there to head back inside. Iago waits for Andrew’s signal outside the front door. As soon as Andrew has taken position to the right of the patio doorway, he signals Iago over the radio. As soon as Iago enters the bar, their suspect darts for the patio. As the suspect rushes through the door he’s meant with a hard right punch to the side of his head, “Surprise bitch!” The suspect stumbles a few steps, but quickly regains his foot and tackles Andrew into the wall. Iago is now on the patio, and delivers a solid soccer kick to the suspect’s abdomen. The man releases his hold on Andrew and delivers a spinning back kick to Iago, sending him through the doorway to the floor. This gives Andrew the second he needs to straight kick the man in his ribs. This stuns him; Andrew jumps in the air and comes down with a fist to the man’s head sending him to the ground. Iago, by now has gotten to his feet and is standing over the man with his gun drawn, “You’re done dude, give up.”
“How wrong you are.” The man gets to his feet, eyes, red, and fangs in plain sight; he punches Iago square in the jaw, sending him back eight feet to his previous resting place. Before Andrew has time to pull his gun, the vampire has sent him off his feet and crashing onto the table, four feet behind him. The vampire then grabs Andrew by his feet and smashes him against one of the support poles for the patio. Iago is on his feet again, and rolls to his gun, and fires three rounds into the vampire. The 9mm bullets barely faze the vampire, and he’s on top of Iago in the blink of an eye. The vampire grabs Iago by the throat and throws him into one of the support poles. This distraction has given Andrew time to pull the Redeemer.
“Hey asshole!” As the vampire looks to Andrew he is greeted with a .44 Magnum bullet to his head and his chest. “Get up from that, bitch.” Andrew helps Iago to his feet, “You ok man?”
“Yea I’ll be fine, nothing aspirin won’t fix.”
Night number two of Andrew and Iago’s search for trouble. Three hours of patrolling and not one single lead or sign of activity has been had. Just as the boys are ready to call it a night, they hear a call come in over the radio. “Atenção qualquer unidade nas proximidades de 321 Major Amarante Rua, temos relato de um assalto envolvendo uma mulher e um assaltante descrito como um vampiro.”
Iago, quickly responds to the call, “Unidade 21 responder a chamada.” Iago fires up the sirens and makes his turn to head to the call. Looking at the bewilderedly excited Andrew, “Woman says she was assaulted by a vampire, sounds like it may be one of our guys.”
“AWW YEAH SON LET’S RIDE!
Iago has no trouble finding the address as there are several people on the street, looking for his cruiser. He pulls up in front of the house. There is one man standing on the steps, talking to several of his neighbors, calming them to the situation. Iago can tell that there is still a level of unease in the air, “Look Andrew, I hate to be mean, but I know this area fair enough, and I don’t think they’d take to well to having a foreigner snooping around. Most of these people don’t know any English anyway, so just stay in the car and I’ll take care of it, cool?”
“Yea it’s cool. Just don’t leave me in here too long.”
As Iago gets back in the car, Andrew begins the questioning, “What happened?”
“Woman was coming home from work, got attacked. Her husband heard the commotion, came out with his shotgun, fired off in the air, and started after the assailant. He fired one clear shot but missed him. The woman said the man had red eyes and fangs like a wolf or vampire. She’s ok and everything, but no one got a good look at the assailant. I know there are some shops down the road that have an alley behind them. My guess is that he’d probably head there to find a snack. Some of the workers use them as a shortcut home.”
Andrew taking in all the information, “So what’s our plan then?”
“Was hopin’ you had one.”
“Shit.” After thinking for a minute, “Well, I suppose we head down there and start peeking in windows, but if we find him, I’m going in after him. I don’t think we need a repeat from last time.”
“What do you mean by that?
Laughing, Andrew assures Iago, “Be better for one of us to be up on the hill sniping.”
“Yea, ok, you got a point, less of a chance for trouble and collateral damage too.”
Andrew begins his search. Iago, hangs back, and hugs the store fronts. Andrew comes upon a small book store with only a few women inside finishing their book club. He moves on to a coffee house. Inside there are two men at a back table that have their backs turned to the window. Andrew radios Iago, “Two men, can’t make out any description. I’m going in for a coffee and potty break to try and get a look.” Andrew enters the shop, and goes to the counter, lucky enough, the men get up to leave and as they turn around, he can see that, neither of them fit the description of any of the known suspects. Andrew takes his coffee radios in the negative identity to Iago, and resumes his search. As he nears the last of the three shops, he hears a man and woman in the alley between the plaza end and the fence that separates the corner. He hurries to the corner, and peeks around.
A couple is making out. Classic woman held up against the wall by the seductive fellow. Taking no chance, Andrew draws his gun to a ready and continues watching them. He takes his eyes from the pair to motion Iago to join him at the ready. As Andrew returns his watch, the man bares his fangs to go in for the kill. Andrew steps around the corner and quickly takes his aim and fires a shot before anyone has time to react. The shot passes straight through the vampire’s head. “BOOM! Headshot.” He dashes over and puts one more round into the vampire’s chest to be sure that he is dead.
Iago rushes around the corner, “Damn give a guy some warning!”
Tending to the woman who is clearly and acceptably traumatized, Iago tries to talk to her “my friend never takes the time for intros. You ok, ma’am.” Iago, comes to aid, “I’ll handle this Andrew go bring the car up.”
